If you are an architecture student or work in a field related to residential house designs, you would already probably hear of the Farnsworth House located in Plano, Illinois. This house was considered the symbol of the International Style of Architecture, and this modern white household had the status of a National Historic Landmark. This iconic masterpiece is designed by Architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. But what makes this house the standard of all the houses in the 20th century?

Farnsworth house is built between 1946 and 1951. It is a single-room house made up of glass, primavera wood, steel, and travertine marble. The house is elevated for about 5 feet 3 inches above the ground because it is built in the floodplain along Fox River. The first owner of the house, Dr. Edith Farnsworth wanted a place to relax every weekend. Since the house is constructed in the middle of the 10-acre secluded wooden site, the glass pavilion offers a close touch with nature. Perfect for relaxation! But aside from pioneering the use of steel-and-glass in construction, a new aesthetic was born.

Minimalism has been quite a trend in all households in this new century. It is more of like the standard of modern houses. These types of houses are less ornamented, with little details, and painted with pale colors. People are now fond of simple yet eye-pleasing interior designs. This trend travels from urban to rural areas, from cities to and countryside. People nowadays prefer less complicated and effortless styles. But the idea delivered by the construction of the Farnsworth House highlights the fact that the aesthetic of minimalism is not complete without nature.
